How do I make a good self-tape?

While each self-tape audition may come with specific instructions from the casting director, here are some general guidelines you can follow:
1) Use a neutral background, good lighting (with your face clearly visible), and ensure clear sound.
2) Frame your shot as a mid-shot (chest to head), unless instructed otherwise.
3) Keep it simple—avoid dramatic music or heavy editing.
4) Know your lines and understand the scene. Don’t “perform at” the camera—stay natural and truthful.
Remember, casting directors and directors want to see you, not your editing skills.
